Youssef Chermiti cost Rangers a pretty penny in this summer’s transfer window – but his first start left a lot to be desired this week.
The Portuguese striker was a whopping £10million signing for the Light Blues in what was their most significant transfer outlay in a number of years.
Sporting director Kevin Thelwell raided his former club, Everton, and spent a hefty chunk of Gers’ transfer budget on the 21-year-old.
Presumably the ex-Toffees recruitment chief sees something in the player who may yet have a big career ahead of him at Ibrox and then beyond.
Fans, though, were left unconvinced by their big money signing in last night’s 1-0 defeat at home to Genk in the Europa League in front of a home support who seem to be at the end of their tether with manager Russell Martin.
Martin again copped flak as he has done numerous times already this season with Rangers sitting 11th in the Scottish Premiership table without a victory in any of their opening five fixtures in the league.
What Rangers spent on Youssef Chermiti at Everton
But his decision to leave Bojan Miovski on the bench despite the North Macedonian netting his first goal for the club vs Hibs was a head scratcher.
Chermiti was given the opportunity to show what he was capable of but he well and truly flopped with just 25 touches throughout the 80 minutes he was given on the pitch.
It was a dismal showing for the player and left punters wondering what exactly it is that the forward offers.
One took to social media, X, to say: “There is not another football team on the planet that would have committed £10 million to Chermiti. Absolute lunacy.”
Another commented: “Chermiti looks a poor man’s Jon Daly.”
One wrote: “Chermiti 2/10,” as a fourth added: “No way you can look at Chermiti and rate him. That’s either blind faith or being deliberately contrary.”
Rangers fans unconvinced by Youssef Chermiti’s first start vs Genk
Others looked more favourably on their new attacker, with one commenting: “Not sure how last night can be pinned on Chermiti. We created absolutely nothing for him.”
Another wrote: “I can’t be the only one that thought chermiti was by far our best player last night”.
It is still extremely early for Rangers fans to make a legitimate assessment of Chermiti but the early signs are questionable to say the least.
Miovski, for example, cost less than half the money and is a proven goal scorer in the Scottish top flight.
Chermiti has played just 22 matches in two years and is yet to prove himself at any real level.
Everton must be thinking they’ve won a watch with the transfer fee they landed for an untried and untested player.
