Aston Villa’s disappointing form was to continue today as visitors Sunderland bagged their first away win of the season.
Without main striker Kenwyne Jones, it was hard to see where the Sunderland goals would come from.
But with just seven minutes remaining, former Cardiff City striker Michael Chopra clinched a vital three points for the Black Cats with a neat finish passed Scott Carson.
Villa had a lot of early posession with John Carew and Shaun Maloney wasting good chances.
Carson was lucky to stay on the pitch as he appeared to handle the ball outside his box.
Villa threw on Marlon Harewood in the second half in place of Nigel Reo-Coker and he almost immediately made in impact, but his shot went just wide.
A crowd of over 42,000 in attendance saw Villa’s European hopes all but diminish.
At Villa Park, it finished Aston Villa 0-1 Sunderland.
