Leicester City’s Super Kev Retires

After a career spanning 20 years, Kevin Phillips retirement from the game today leaving many a football fan in admiration of his career.

Phillips, who turns 41 this summer, burst onto the scene for Watford at the tail end of the 1994/95 season scoring 24 goals in nearly 60 appearances for the Hornets. A big money move to Sunderland saw him score over 100 goals in just over 200 games for the Black Cats where he became the first Sunderland player to score over 30 goals in a season since the legendary Brian Clough back in the 1961/62 season.

After a two year spell at Southampton, Phillips moved to the Midlands and found the net for Aston Villa, West Bromwich Albion and Birmingham City scoring 61 goals in the process before a loan spell at Blackpool in July 2011 where he scored 18 goals for the Seasiders.

On the last day of the 2013 transfer window, Phillips joined Crystal Palace on loan and became the club’s oldest goalscorer at the age of 39 years and 7 months when he scored a hatrick against Hull City. Crystal Palace went on to reach the final of the Play Offs that season where Phillips scored the decisive goal at Wembley to see the Eagles return to the Premier League……at the expense of his former club Watford.

Phillips moved to Leicester City in January 2014 where he finished his career by helping the Foxes to the Championship Title and promotion back to the Premier League.

He will always be remembered for his partnership with Niall Quinn where the “little and large” strike pairing produced many goals for the North East side.
