Premiership Player Profile – Christopher Samba

The player profile returns, with this particular profile focusing on Blackburn Rovers centre back, Christopher Samba.

Christopher Samba is a central defender who started his senior career as CS Sedan Ardennes B. He played 26 times for the club before being promoted to the first team, where he went on to play four games.
Samba then made a transfer to Hertha BSC’s second side where he played 28 times, before being brought into the first team where he played a further 20 games. However, during his time in Germany, the centre back had failed to cement a first team place, and was given a trial by Premier League side Blackburn Rovers.

Samba impressed in his trial for Mark Hughes’ men and was signed in 2007. Although a centre back, Samba has also been deployed as a striker. His aerial presence is often a cause for concern for most opposition as his 6 foot 4 figure gives him the advantage in the heading department.
As a centre back, he is seen as a strong, no nonsense defender which is what led him to secure a first team place from Mark Hughes’ side to Sam Allardyce’s side.

The 2009/2010 season saw Samba finish with four goals to his name – being the 5th top goalscorer in the side.
One of his best goals this season was arguably against Arsenal when he scored the winning goal in a 2-1 victory. He was also named captain in this match, even with club captain Ryan Nelsen and Vice-captain David Dunn playing.
Since his transfer from Hertha BSC, the 26 year old has made 131 appearances for Rovers, scoring 12 goals.
