What should Blackburn do in January?

It’s coming to that time of year where the season is approaching it’s half way point, everybody will have a vague idea of where their team is going to end up come the end of the season and if that isn’t looking good, this is the time for changes.

The first thing we have to realise is that Roque Santa Cruz is almost inevitably going to leave us in January to one of the ‘Big Four’, Manchester City or Tottenham. This causes great concern for us Rovers fans as most of us believe that Santa Cruz is the only player who can score week in, week out. This isn’t the case, Matt Derbyshire has been playing well in recent weeks and has picked up 4 goals this season making him our top goal scorer. Benni Mccarthy started to hit form and has scored 3 goals, Jason Roberts is capable of scoring and there is always big Chris Samba who always gets up for set-pieces.

The defence is our priority as we have looked extremely unstable since the start of this season and have leaked goals like a loose tap. I don’t think the partnership of Samba and Nelsen is working which i don’t understand as last season it worked a treat but now we have to look at either buying another centre-back or trying some other partnership like Khizanishvilli or Ooijer with Nelsen/Samba or Ooijer and Khizanishvilli together. As for the right-back position, Danny Simpson isn’t really working at all, he seems to give the ball away constantly and will make silly challenges that will lead to free-kicks being given away in stupid positions. As we can not afford the big name signings like William Gallas or Sergio Ramos, we are going to have to look at the Championship for a cheaper option.

There are three defenders i would like to see given a go in the Premier League:

Ashley Williams (Swansea centre-back)- This 24 year old defender is a rising star in the Championshiip. He is a regular for his national team of Wales and is a composed defender who can time a challenge to perfection, they call him ‘Mr Reliable’ in Swansea. He won a major honor of the North-West Player of the Year Award ahead of the likes of Man United’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard.

Kevin Foley (Wolverhampton right-back)-Kevin Foley is a talented full-back who came through the junior ranks at Kenilworth Road. This 23 year old defender is a beacon of consistency since his switch from Luton last season, he has been a regular member of the Irish national side

Tore Reginiussen (Tromso right back) – This 23 year old right back is a regular for the Norwegian national side. He was actually elected Tromso’s best player by the supporters the first season he played for them. He has good pace and he is a good ball winner.
