Diego Simeone is facing a touchline ban after being charged with unsporting conduct by UEFA following his red card during Atletico Madrid’s 3-2 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.
Simeone charged by UEFA after Champions League red card
The Atletico Madrid manager clashed with supporters behind the away dugout after Virgil van Dijk’s 92nd-minute winner sealed victory for Arne Slot’s side.
Italian referee Maurizio Mariani wasted little time in sending the 55-year-old coach off following heated exchanges with fans.
Under UEFA regulations, Simeone is expected to receive a one-match Champions League suspension, although the governing body does have the authority to extend the ban if it deems his behaviour more serious.
It means he will have to watch the 30 September clash with Eintracht Frankfurt from the stands.
Liverpool also charged after Atletico clash
Liverpool have not escaped punishment either. UEFA confirmed the club is under investigation for objects allegedly thrown from the stands during the high-octane contest.
No decision has yet been made on a separate incident involving Atletico nutritionist David Lagos, who is accused of spitting towards Liverpool fans during the fallout.
Atletico say they will launch their own inquiry into the allegations.
Simeone explains Liverpool red card
Speaking after the match, Simeone claimed he had been provoked by insults from the crowd throughout the game.
“When they scored the third goal, he [a supporter] turned around and insulted me,” Simeone said. “When I turned around, I am a person and I’m human.
“I’m not going to get into the exact nature of the insults. I don’t want to get involved with that. I have got to stay in my place. I know what went on behind the manager’s bench.”
Atletico had fought back from 2-0 down thanks to a brace from Marcos Llorente, only for Van Dijk’s injury-time header to sink the Spanish side.
Alexander Isak set for Liverpool Carabao Cup start
Meanwhile, attention now turns to Liverpool’s Carabao Cup third-round clash with Southampton at Anfield on Tuesday night.
Arne Slot has confirmed he will make sweeping changes to his line-up, with Alexander Isak expected to start as he continues his push for full match fitness following his £125 million move from Newcastle.
Isak forced through his transfer by refusing to play for Eddie Howe’s side and has only managed 81 minutes of competitive football since the end of last season.
The striker made his Liverpool debut against Atletico, featuring for nearly an hour, and came off the bench against Everton at the weekend.
The game against Southampton could provide the perfect chance for him to sharpen up before returning to Premier League action.
