Newcastle Enter Race For Three Cap England Star But Will Face Major Competition

Newcastle United Adam Wharton

Newcastle United have entered the race to sign Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton – but they face stiff competition from rivals.

It’s been a transfer window to forget for Newcastle fans.

With no major incomings so far, Magpies boss Eddie Howe looks set to finish the season with the squad he has, barring any late movement.

Newcastle were interested in Morgan Gibbs-White, but news around the Nottingham Forest man has gone quiet this week.

Injuries have severely hampered the Tyneside outfit this season, who sit ninth in the Premier League.

And with Bruno Guimaraes’ fitness a major concern, those issues show no sign of ending.

But while there have been no big signings this window, there is still time for that to change.

And according to reports, Newcastle have reached out to Crystal Palace over a potential deal for midfielder Adam Wharton.

However, any deal would most likely be for a summer move.

Newcastle Interested In Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton

Signing Wharton from Palace will not be easy, though.

Newcastle tried to lure the 21-year-old to St. James’ Park two years ago – when he was still at Blackburn Rovers.

But Wharton instead opted to join Palace, where he has developed rapidly.

Now regarded as one of the best young holding midfielders in England, Wharton has already earned three England caps.

He is widely expected to leave Selhurst Park in the summer, as Palace’s mass exodus continues.

Newcastle will do everything they can to sign Wharton, but will face competition from the Premier League’s elite.

Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City are all interested, with a move to Anfield thought to be the youngster’s preferred destination.

If that is the case, Eddie Howe will need to do a lot of convincing to persuade Wharton that Newcastle is a better move.

Newcastle Could Have Made A Costly Mistake In Not Signing Wharton

Wharton is one of several youngsters to be linked to Newcastle over the past few years.

Bournemouth’s Alex Scott was another who, like Wharton, opted for a move elsewhere.

Both players have kicked on superbly since arriving in the Premier League.

And many around Newcastle are wondering why the club didn’t make more effort to sign either of them when first interested.

Palace are now asking for close to £100 million for Adam Wharton.

There is no suggestion Newcastle would offer that much, or that Palace wouldn’t accept less.

But failing to secure Wharton from Blackburn in 2024 could still prove costly if the club fork out heavily for him now.

Regardless of how this one plays out, it may prove yet another example of poor long-term planning from Newcastle.
