Beckford a good gamble?

So, its Pre-Season time again and clubs are hunting around different clubs, leagues and countries for the next best thing. Unlike Manchester City – who seem to concentrate on bringing in egos and reputations – what Everton – The Peoples Club – were more interested in on doing was looking around for potential. And what I think was a great little piece of business was the capture of impressive Jermaine Beckford. However, the question still remains, is Jermaine Beckford good enough?

A free transfer and a respectable gamble, Beckford has certainly proved his worth in the lower leagues. Banging in 31 goals in 52 appearances for Leeds United in League 1 seems a tasty amount. The Premier League however is a massive step up for the lad, and I, along with many others, are wondering whether the step up is one of a steep nature and he will fall at the first hurdle.

However, look at it this way, if he doesn’t prove he can score in the Premier League, what is the worst that can happen? He can be sold to someone in the Championship, League 1 etc for probably nothing less than £500k. The highest floggable amount? I think around £3-4m.

Yakubu – not up to scratch. Saha – injury prone. Silva – a little young. Baxter – not just yet. Gueye – maybe. Beckford – A gamble, but one worth taking.

A decent punt. Well done Moyes.
